Preparing for University or College demands a high level of academic English. This involves developing overall English skills with a strong emphasis on academic reading and writing, as well as note-taking, research and study skills. The English for Academic Purposes program at GV Vancouver combines 20 lessons per week of general English studies in the morning with a double option afternoon class (10 lessons per week) of academic reading and writing skills.

GV General English, Standard 20 lessons per week
The curriculum emphasizes practical application of language skills. Directors meet on a regular basis to review all academic and curricular issues to ensure uniformly high quality programs at all schools.Classroom activities focus on developing all four-language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking with an emphasis on communication. Students often work in pairs or groups to increase their English comprehension through interactive activities. Real-life topics (work and society, for example.) are explored each session providing opportunities for students to practice English in real-life situations both inside and outside the classroom. Homework varies from program to program.
Students should expect to work within each level for one or two sessions (4-8 weeks) or an average of 8 weeks depending on their test results and attendance. All levels, however, have 3 months of curriculum.Whether you are a complete beginner or an advanced English speaker, this superb overall course will give you the skills and confidence necessary to get to the next level of proficiency.

GV Intensive General English
Our most popular program, General English is available for all levels of English. This dynamic, communication-based program has the following daily structure:
1. Language Structure (Grammar): Practical use of grammar to improve speaking skills. Specific language structures are introduced at each level through a set grammar text. High School Academic Preparation is a program designed to help prepare students to meet academic challenges they will face in Canadian high schools. The program includes academic writing, grammar review, academic speaking and listening, academic study skills, presentation skills, and research skills.

Elective classes supplement the morning program, covering English for high school subject areas of social studies, geography, history, math, science and computers.

Please note: This is a rigorous, demanding program. Students must register for a minimum of 25 lessons per week and be at a GV 4 level of English. Those students who are not at GV 4 level at time of arrival may be placed in General English in lieu of Academic Preparation.

Students wishing to start at another time of year will be considered for the General English program.

Minimum age for the High School Preparation program is 14 years old.

360 High School Prep Support includes
a) settlement orientation (bank account, SIM card, PC/internet set-up, library card, transit pass, etc),
b) on-going care, assessment and reporting to parents on student’s academics, accommodation,
and activities and
c) assistance with high school selection and application.

English + Conservation: Requires 8 - 12 weeks advance registration.

One-on-one lessons will allow students to learn at their own speed and study the content of their choice. Lesson schedules are variable and dependent on teacher/classroom availability.

Our IELTS Preparation course has been designed to prepare you to successfully complete the IELTS examination. This course will examine in-depth each of the four modules of the IELTS test and includes strategies to better prepare for the final examination.

This test is intended for candidates planning to use English for academic purposes or for immigration purposes.
