International students in numbers

4.4 million international students have studied in Australia since 2005.

Most of them went home.

Here is what the numbers say.

– The estimated percentage of international students who gained permanent residence ranges from 16 to 40 per cent, depending on who measures and over how many years.

Fewer than one in three graduate visa holders now transition to PR, down from two in three in 2014.

– International education earned Australia $55 billion in 2025 alone. Between 2019 and 2025 it brought in more than $270 billion. It is our fourth-largest export. Even after removing a third, which the ABS says students fund from work in Australia, it is still well over $35 billion a year.

– Graduates who leave become employers, business partners, buyers and advocates for Australia in their home countries. That value does not appear in export figures. It shows up over decades.

Importantly, until 2 October 2026, policy allowed students to:

– lodge further student visas onshore and change courses

– bring partners and children

– extend their stay through post-study work rights

Students used what the system offered. That is not abuse, that’s following the policy.

The political debate keeps treating a policy as a people problem.
