COST OF LIVING

           New Zealand’s cost of living is generally cheaper than that of countries like the UK and USA. In general, the North Island is a more expensive place to live and study than the South Island. Living costs will depend on your lifestyle and which part of the country you live in. Some costs vary by region. The recommended budget is between $18,000-$27,000 each year.

ACCOMMODATION

           The three main types of accommodation open to international students who want to study a degree in New Zealand are: University halls of residence. Private student housing and Homestay accommodation. On-campus accommodation is the most requested type of accommodation for new undergraduate students, with rooms generally priced at around NZ$200-$300 per week, including room, board and utilities. Private accommodation can be cheaper, but you will need to factor in bills, you can expect to pay between $70 and $150 a week (bills not included).

STUDYING IN NEW ZEALAND

           New Zealand’s education system allows for flexibility, choice and great support. At its heart is the New Zealand Qualifications' Framework (NZQF). This lists all qualifications in a series of levels, from Level 1 to 10, and includes certificates, diplomas and degrees. Whether you’re studying at secondary or tertiary level, it’s a good idea to check that your study programme will lead towards a qualification listed on the NZQF, because this means it’s quality assured.

WORKING IN NEW ZEALAND

          Full-time students can work up to 20 hours a week in New Zealand during the academic year and full time during scheduled holidays. International students have the same legal minimum rights and as all citizens working in New Zealand. These include a right to a minimum wage, paid annual and public holidays and rest breaks.

IMMIGRATION & VISA IN NEW ZEALAND

          As part of your student visa application, you must provide evidence that you can cover your living expenses while studying in New Zealand. If you’re studying in New Zealand on a scholarship or a sponsor/family member has agreed to accept financial responsibility for you while you’re here, you may not be required to show proof of funds. If you will be studying in New Zealand for more than one year, you‘ll need to prove that you have at least $15,000 to support yourself for the first year. If you’re studying for less than a year, you must have at least $1250 for each month of study to contribute to your living expenses.
