We’re seeing another wave of student visa refusals, particularly for Latin American applicants. The copy and paste templates using vague language, however one key issue stands out across the board:

Applicants stating they will “look for a job” or “start a business” after completing their course is no longer sufficient.
This statement is too generic. Immigration is expecting a clear, logical, and well-structured explanation of how the chosen course directly contributes to the applicant’s future in their home country — and how it justifies the substantial financial investment.

Here’s a sample refusal wording:

“The applicant did not clearly and logically articulate how the proposed course of study alone would substantially benefit their remuneration level, or future career prospects, to warrant the substantial expenses associated with international education.”

How to mitigate the refusal risk:
Applicants should clearly outline:

  • The specific job or business plan they intend to pursue
  • The skills or qualifications required for that path
  • Why the chosen course in Australia is essential and not available locally
  • How this investment will translate into better career outcomes or income in their home country

An example of a reasonable justification:

“I work in customer service for a logistics company in Brazil. We often deal with suppliers from North America. Studying English in Australia will help me improve my communication skills so I can work more confidently in international logistics. When I return to Brazil, I will use my English skills to communicate better with our English speaking partners. This course is an important step to help me grow in my job and increase my income.”

“It is also recommended to include a written confirmation from their employer to support the statement.”

Final Thought:
General statements are no longer enough. To succeed, applicants must connect the dots by providing a realistic plan that makes the course essential for their future in their home country, not just a reason to enter Australia.
