Dependants are now a migration lever<\/h2>\n\n  <p style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">Partner and child applications are drawing harder scrutiny as net overseas migration becomes the political target. The numbers explain why. On the Department&#8217;s own figures, at 30 June 2025 there were 78,686 dependants on student visas and 65,252 on Temporary Graduate visas in Australia. That is close to 144,000 counted heads across the two programs.<\/p>\n\n  <div style=\"background:#faf8f3;border-left:4px solid #f07500;padding:20px 24px;margin:0 0 18px;border-radius:4px;\">\n    <p style=\"margin:0;font-size:17px;\">The student figure is falling, yet the 485 number is still rising. Dependants make up 28.5% of the Temporary Graduate cohort, against 13% on the student visa.<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n\n  <p style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">In my personal view, partners and children should not sit on a student application for a course of less than a year, if at all. Family members can come and visit, or lodge their own student visa applications. The exception is long-term work or research. A one-year course is not a family relocation, and the system will more likely start to treat it that way.<\/p>\n\n  <h2 style=\"font-family:'Playfair Display',Georgia,serif;color:#0f2540;font-size:26px;margin:40px 0 14px;font-weight:700;\">2. Source of funds, not balance<\/h2>\n\n  <p style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">I have covered this before. The number in the account stopped being the test a while ago. Where it came from, when it landed, and whether it survives a manual check is the test now.<\/p>\n\n  <h2 style=\"font-family:'Playfair Display',Georgia,serif;color:#0f2540;font-size:26px;margin:40px 0 14px;font-weight:700;\">3. Employment history is in scope<\/h2>\n\n  <p style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">This is the new one. Self-employed, between jobs, or a career path that does not read cleanly. Each of those is now a question the officer asks. An unexplained gap, or a job story that does not progress logically, is a credibility flag in exactly the way course progression has been.<\/p>\n\n  <h2 style=\"font-family:'Playfair Display',Georgia,serif;color:#0f2540;font-size:26px;margin:40px 0 14px;font-weight:700;\">4. English is on the record<\/h2>\n\n  <p style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">PRISMS now collects English test results. The score sits in the system, visible and checkable, before assessment even starts. The gap between what a CoE implies and what a student can actually demonstrate just closed.<\/p>\n\n  <h2 style=\"font-family:'Playfair Display',Georgia,serif;color:#0f2540;font-size:26px;margin:40px 0 14px;font-weight:700;\">The shift<\/h2>\n\n  <p style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">Refusal is no longer a country problem you manage at the front end. It is a profile problem that hits finances, family, work history, and language at once. Agents who keep treating it as one isolated risk will keep losing applications they thought were clean.<\/p>\n\n  <p style=\"margin:0 0 28px;\">The work is not writing a better GS statement. It is reading the whole profile the way the officer now reads it, and building the file to survive all four checks.
