{"id":16353,"date":"2025-09-24T18:20:17","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T18:20:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.educli.com\/resources\/?p=16353"},"modified":"2026-03-02T03:01:42","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T03:01:42","slug":"international-student-numbers-in-steep-decline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.educli.com\/resources\/international-student-numbers-in-steep-decline\/","title":{"rendered":"International Student Numbers in Steep Decline"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>New data confirms what many in the sector have feared, international student enrolments in Australia are falling sharply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Overall new enrolments are <strong>down 16%<\/strong> compared to last year.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The hardest hit is the <strong>English language (ELICOS) sector<\/strong>, with a staggering <strong>38% decline<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For the first time in history all the<strong> ducation sectors, including<\/strong> schools, VET, higher ed, and ELICOS are down.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The main culprit Australia now charges the <strong>world\u2019s highest non-refundable visa application fee<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>July 2024: fee jumped from $710 \u2192 $1600<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>July 2025: another 25% increase \u2192 $2000<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While total enrolments remain high, commencements are falling, colleges are closing, and experts warn this is damaging Australia\u2019s education brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Industry voices are raising alarms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Phil Honeywood (IEAA):<\/strong> \u201cWe are doing damage to brand Australia, particularly in our own region.\u201d<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ian Aird (English Australia):<\/strong> Visa costs, refusals, and confusion are cutting jobs (3,000\u20135,000 lost) and hitting tourism, hospitality, and Australia\u2019s global reputation.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Luke Sheehy (Universities Australia):<\/strong> Stable and welcoming policy settings are critical if Australia wants to remain competitive.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>International education isn\u2019t just about classrooms, it is the Australia\u2019s <strong>fourth-largest export<\/strong>, worth over $50 billion. It supports local jobs, communities, and soft diplomacy worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By reshaping its immigration and education policies, Australia has the opportunity to secure its place in the global talent race.
