When the ABS (Australian Bureau of Statistics) reports permanent and long-term arrivals<\/strong>, they\u2019re talking about people entering Australia intending to stay 12 months or more (or permanently)<\/strong> regardless of their citizenship or visa type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These figures reflect Australia\u2019s migration settings, education demand, and humanitarian commitments, and they include many people contributing to our workforce, families, and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monthly fluctuations occur due to processing times and seasonal patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s what the data tells us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest numbers:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

* 447,620 net permanent & long-term arrivals<\/strong> in the 12 months to May 2025<\/strong>, the second-highest annual total on record<\/strong>.
* 33,230 arrivals in May alone<\/strong>, the highest May total ever recorded.
* Temporary visitors & residents (short stays) actually recorded a slight net outflow<\/em>, but long-term arrivals are driving the growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who are these arrivals?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

They generally fall into these main visa categories<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Permanent Visas <\/strong>Estimated monthly contribution: ~21,500 visas (mostly skilled & family)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    • Skilled migration visas<\/strong>: 189, 190, 186<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Family visas<\/strong>: Partner (820\/801, 309\/100), Parent, Child<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Humanitarian visas<\/strong>: Refugee & Special Humanitarian (200\u2013204, 866)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • New Zealand SCV holders – <\/strong>Arriving on subclass 444 visas, often staying long-term: estimated 3,000 per month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      2. Temporary Long-Term Visas (12+ months)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

      These are temporary but intended for stays of a year or more. Short-term visitors & returning residents recorded a net outflow<\/em> despite high volumes \u2014 over 1.6 million arrivals & departures each way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • International students (subclass 500)<\/strong>: ~26,210 arrivals in May.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Temporary Skilled (TSS 482) & Graduate (485)<\/strong>: ~1\u20132,000 monthly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Visitor and Tourist visas:<\/strong> Several hundred thousand each month.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Bridging visas<\/strong>: a few hundred monthly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
