It&#8217;s the kind of headline that stirs emotion, garners attention, and too often oversimplifies a complex issue. But what they won\u2019t tell you is this: most of the talking points are misdirected, misleading, and based on flawed comparisons\u2014particularly when Australia is looking up to countries like the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Australia Is Not the USA<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When politicians argue about controlling borders, student numbers, and immigration policies, they often lean on examples from the United States. But Australia and the U.S. are <em>fundamentally different<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Population<\/strong>: The U.S. has over <strong>330 million people<\/strong>, while Australia sits at just <strong>26 million<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Illegal Immigration<\/strong>: The U.S. has an estimated <strong>10\u201312 million undocumented immigrants<\/strong>. Australia has a few thousand, mostly visa overstayers who entered legally.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Education &amp; Prestige<\/strong>: U.S. universities like Harvard, MIT, and Stanford attract the best talent globally. Australia does well, but our education system does not carry the same global prestige. So, when students choose Australia, it\u2019s not because we&#8217;re the world\u2019s top destination\u2014it\u2019s because of safety, lifestyle, and the relative ease of access.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Living Costs<\/strong>: Sydney and Melbourne routinely rank among the <strong>most expensive cities in the world<\/strong>. In comparison, many major U.S. cities have significantly lower living costs. Students choosing Australia pay a premium\u2014and they bring that money into our economy.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Scapegoating of International Students<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, politicians have ramped up rhetoric around international students &#8220;taking jobs&#8221; and &#8220;causing rental shortages.&#8221; This narrative is <strong>not only false\u2014it\u2019s dangerous<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research and reports have consistently shown that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>International students contribute billions to the economy<\/strong>\u2014over $50 billion in 2024.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>They create jobs<\/strong>, particularly in education, hospitality, and accommodation sectors.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>They do not take away jobs<\/strong> from Australians; in fact, many work part-time in roles and gig-economy jobs which many Australians are unwilling to take.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Claims that they are responsible for the housing crisis have been debunked. <strong>The real issue lies in years of underinvestment in housing and poor urban planning.<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The $5,000 Visa Application Fee<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Proposing a <strong>$5,000 application fee for international student visas<\/strong> is not only illogical\u2014it\u2019s a slap in the face to the very sector that is keeping parts of our economy alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s be clear: this won\u2019t stop low-quality applications. It will stop <strong>legitimate, qualified, and talented individuals<\/strong> from choosing Australia. And they\u2019ll simply go elsewhere\u2014to Canada, the UK, or the U.S. or any other upcoming destination that is inviting for international students\u2014taking their money and skills with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Smarter Immigration Strategy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Australia can\u2019t compete with the U.S. in manufacturing or technology. We don\u2019t have the population for massive-scale, labour-intensive industries. We don\u2019t have the cost advantage either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What we <\/strong><strong><em>do<\/em><\/strong><strong> have is education, lifestyle, and a stable political environment.<\/strong> That\u2019s our competitive edge. And international education should be seen not as a problem\u2014but a <strong>solution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A smarter strategy would be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Investing in the international education sector<\/strong>, not overregulating it into decline.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Supporting pathways for high-performing graduates<\/strong> to stay and contribute to our workforce.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Distinguishing between legal, temporary migration (like students) and illegal immigration<\/strong>\u2014they are not the same issue and should not be lumped together.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Real Drain on Public Resources<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s be honest: <strong>illegal immigration is a cost<\/strong> to the system\u2014particularly in countries like the U.S. But Australia doesn\u2019t have this problem at scale. Yet, our politicians want to apply <strong>U.S.-style solutions<\/strong> to <strong>non-U.S. problems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a distraction, a political tool, and the general public should stop falling for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In Conclusion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As voters and as an industry, we should demand more than slogans and fearmongering. Immigration, especially international education, is a critical part of Australia&#8217;s future.
