{"id":14099,"date":"2024-12-21T01:32:29","date_gmt":"2024-12-21T01:32:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.educli.com\/blog\/?p=14099"},"modified":"2026-03-02T00:08:44","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T00:08:44","slug":"temporary-graduate-visa-update-and-fees-increase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.educli.com\/resources\/temporary-graduate-visa-update-and-fees-increase\/","title":{"rendered":"Temporary Graduate Visa update and fees increase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temporary Graduate Visa update and fees increase<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migration Amendment (Graduate Visas No. 2) Regulations 2024<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> brings important changes to the Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate) visa, especially for the Post-Higher Education Work (PHEW) stream.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Key Changes:<\/b><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Graduate certificates<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are no longer considered degrees.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Graduate diplomas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only count if an applicant completes them <\/span><b>right after<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a related bachelor\u2019s, master\u2019s, or PhD program.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example:<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If the applicant finishes a Bachelor of Business and immediately starts a Graduate Diploma in Marketing, the diploma will count.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>No more Australian Study Requirement (ASR):<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before, applicants had to meet the Australian Study Requirement (ASR). Now, that requirement has been removed. This makes it easier for graduates to apply.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>New academic rules:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clause 485.231 explains that only a specific degree at a recognised institution meets the visa requirements.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Focus on regional areas:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applicants for a second or third Subclass 485 visa in the PHEW stream, must live, work, or study in <\/span><b>designated regional areas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example of regional areas:<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cities like Adelaide, Darwin, and regions in regional New South Wales or Victoria.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>Why are these changes happening?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These updates are part of the government\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migration Strategy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was released in December 2023.
