{"id":13189,"date":"2023-06-29T00:34:04","date_gmt":"2023-06-29T00:34:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.educli.com\/blog\/?p=13189"},"modified":"2026-03-01T01:23:54","modified_gmt":"2026-03-01T01:23:54","slug":"important-changes-to-australian-to-visas-from-1-july-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.educli.com\/resources\/important-changes-to-australian-to-visas-from-1-july-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Important changes to Australian to visas from 1 July 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following up on our previous post, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.educli.com\/blog\/2023\/05\/22\/changes-to-student-sc500-temporary-graduate-sc485-and-covid-sc408-visas-from-1-july-2023\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes to Student (sc500), Temporary Graduate (sc485) and COVID (sc408) visas from 1 July 2023 <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we look at further changes to Student visas (sc500) and Temporary Graduate visas (sc485).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Student visa work restrictions re-introduced on 1 July<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student visa work restrictions will be re-introduced from 1 July 2023 and capped at a rate of 48 hours per fortnight. Employers should ensure that all relevant staff, including managers and supervisors, or those responsible for rostering, are aware of these changes for student visa holders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, some education providers are required to re-introduce face to face classes where international student will be required to attend at least 80% of the contact hours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, with the attendance requirements and the cap on working hours, the Government bodies expect compliance from international students with the above.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Student graduate visa extensions &#8211; 485 Temporary Graduate visas \u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 1 July 2023, some holders of subclass <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/immi.homeaffairs.gov.au\/visas\/getting-a-visa\/visa-listing\/temporary-graduate-485\/graduate-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">485 Temporary Graduate visas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be allowed to stay in Australia for a longer period. The change will result in a stay period of:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four years for a bachelor\u2019s degree graduate, up from two years previously<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five years for a master\u2019s degree graduate, up from three years previously<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">six years for a doctoral graduate, up from four years previously<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extension of one or two years for eligible students who live, work and study in regional areas will remain unchanged.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be eligible for an extension, international bachelor and masters students must have a qualification listed on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.education.gov.au\/extended-poststudy-work-rights-international-graduates\/resources\/list-occupations-and-qualifications-eligible-poststudy-work-rights-extension\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eligible qualifications list<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. All doctoral graduates are eligible for the two-year extension regardless of their qualification. Extensions will automatically be applied to Temporary Graduate visa holders who have completed a qualification from the approved list or who apply for a Temporary Graduate visa from 1 July 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/immi.homeaffairs.gov.au\/visas\/getting-a-visa\/visa-listing\/temporary-graduate-485\/graduate-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">485 Temporary Graduate visas requirements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be under 50 years of age<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hold an eligible visa<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have held a student visa in the last 6 months<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>have a qualification relevant to an occupation on the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/immi.homeaffairs.gov.au\/visas\/working-in-australia\/skill-occupation-list\"><b>skilled occupation list<\/b><\/a><b> (Note: this requirement only applies to new applications lodged on or after 1 July 2023)<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>have applied for a skills assessment in your nominated occupation on the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/immi.homeaffairs.gov.au\/visas\/working-in-australia\/skill-occupation-list\"><b>skilled occupation list<\/b><\/a><b> (Note: this requirement only applies to new applications lodged on or after 1 July 2023)<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provide evidence of adequate health insurance for all applicants when you apply<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provide evidence you have applied for an AFP check when you apply<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provide evidence of the required level of English with the application<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Important change for applicants for 485 Temporary Graduate visas<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The most important change is that the applicants from student visas to Temporary Graduate visas sc485 will have to provide evidence of having received or applied for skills assessment for occupation listed on the skills list issued by the Immigration Department.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/immi.homeaffairs.gov.au\/visas\/getting-a-visa\/visa-listing\/temporary-activity-408\/australian-government-endorsed-events-covid-19\">COVID-19 pandemic event (Subclass 408) visa<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government is considering an end date for the COVID-19 pandemic event (Subclass 408) visa possibly from 1 July 2023.
