{"id":12850,"date":"2021-09-30T04:20:31","date_gmt":"2021-09-30T04:20:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.educli.com\/blog\/?p=12850"},"modified":"2026-03-03T11:13:44","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T11:13:44","slug":"canada-opens-new-immigration-pathway-for-international-graduates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.educli.com\/resources\/canada-opens-new-immigration-pathway-for-international-graduates\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada opens new immigration pathway for international graduates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Canadian government has announced\u00a0<a class=\"gtrackexternal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/news\/2021\/04\/new-pathway-to-permanent-residency-for-over-90000-essential-temporary-workers-and-international-graduates.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a new pathway to permanent residence<\/a>\u00a0for over 90,000 essential workers and international graduates already in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Eligible essential workers are those working in one of 40 healthcare occupations \u201cas well as 95 other essential jobs across a range of fields, like caregiving and food production and distribution.\u201d Many of these workers have been crucial contributors to Canada\u2019s fight against COVID and, as in other countries, the pandemic has revealed the massive extent to which workers in frontline jobs (which span a range of sectors) are the linchpins of a functioning society and economy.<\/p>\n<p>International graduates must have completed a higher education programme in Canada within the last four years (no earlier than January 2017). Of the 90,000 total,\u00a0<a class=\"gtrackexternal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/corporate\/mandate\/policies-operational-instructions-agreements\/public-policies\/trpr-international-graduates.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">40,000 application spots are reserved for international students<\/a>\u00a0who have graduated from a Canadian institution.<\/p>\n<p>Students and workers can begin applying for permanent residency under this new immigration stream 6 May 2021, and the window for applications is open until 5 November 2021, or until the limit has been reached.<\/p>\n<p>The new pathway is part of Canada\u2019s overall 2021 Immigration Levels Plan, the goal of which is to see Canada welcome\u00a0<a class=\"gtrackexternal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/news\/2020\/10\/government-of-canada-announces-plan-to-support-economic-recovery-through-immigration.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">401,000 new permanent residents<\/a>\u00a0this year.<\/p>\n<p>It is also the latest in a series of immigration policy updates aimed at encouraging students to keep enrolling with Canadian institutions and to stay on after graduation to join the country\u2019s labour force.
