Its appeal continues to grow, boosted by a strong government policy response to COVID-19. Despite the pandemic, international students can enter Canada, provided they meet certain criteria. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The situation is vastly different in Australia, where students still cannot return, sparking frustration. The country has announced pilot plans to facilitate students\u2019 return, but many remain skeptical as past pilot plans have been mooted and shelved.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>These factors are swaying those interested in Australian universities to look elsewhere, surveys suggest.\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Reports by university vice-chancellors and international education agents say students from India, Nepal and China are heading to universities in Canada and the UK to seek on-campus experiences instead of online study. Some students originally bound for Sydney have reportedly given up <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">on waiting for Australia\u2019s borders to reopen and take up alternative offers at Canadian universities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What Canada has done in regards to the pandemic, and what measures have been put in place for international students:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Re-opening borders<\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Canada\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/news\/2020\/10\/government-introduces-new-border-measures-to-protect-canadian-public-health-provides-update-on-travel-restrictions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">reopened its borders<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to international students on Oct. 20, 2020, allowing them to take in displaced students unable to fulfil their plans to study in Australia and New Zealand. In Canada, designated learning institutions (DLI) must have an\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/studyinternational.com\/news\/canada-covid-approved-designated-learning-institutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">approved COVID-19 readiness plan<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in place before welcoming international students back \u2014 a prerequisite to the federal government\u2019s decision to open the borders to international students.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Quarantine<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Fully vaccinated international students will\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.studyinternational.com\/news\/quarantine-in-canada-vaccinated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">no longer have to quarantine<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in Canada if they test negative for COVID-19 upon arrival, according to the latest guidelines for the country\u2019s phased reopening. Canada will relax its border measures beginning July 5, at which point fully-vaccinated travellers permitted to enter the country will no longer need to quarantine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Easing international students\u2019 PGWP eligibility\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Canadian government previously announced temporary changes to its Post Graduate Work Permit Programme (PGWP), allowing international students to complete their studies online from abroad\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.studyinternational.com\/news\/canada-study-destination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">without affecting their PGWP eligibility<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. They also announced a pathway to permanent residence for 40,000 international graduates, recognising them as valuable contributors to the country\u2019s social and economic fabric.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Vaccination<\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Students must show proof of vaccination in English or French, including the date of vaccination and what vaccination brand they received. As of June 18, 12.82% of Canadian\u2019s are\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/health-infobase.canada.ca\/covid-19\/vaccination-coverage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">fully vaccinated<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, while 64.23% of the total population have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Conversely, just 3.3% of Australians are\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/language\/english\/audio\/prime-minister-scott-morrison-says-he-hopes-australians-will-be-able-to-fly-overseas-in-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">fully vaccinated<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Australia currently approved\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.au\/initiatives-and-programs\/covid-19-vaccines\/getting-vaccinated-for-covid-19\/which-covid-19-vaccine-will-i-receive#covid19-vaccines-approved-for-use-in-australia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">two vaccines<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: Pfizer\/BioNTech vaccine and the Oxford\/Astrazeneca vaccine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Students who are not vaccinated may still enter Canada but will be required to test thrice (pre-departure, upon arrival, and on the eighth day) and quarantine in the country.
