What the Sector Is Saying About the Subclass 485 Fee Increase

Since the Subclass 485 visa fee jump came into effect on 1 March 2026, the reaction across the sector has been loud, and largely negative.

Here’s the consistent feedback coming from students, agents, providers, and migration professionals:

Students feel blindsided
Many graduates say the increase felt sudden, poorly communicated, and impossible to plan for. For applicants already budgeting tightly, doubling the cost overnight has been described as “the final straw”. And for some, this was not just a financial shock, it has fundamentally changed their post-study plans overnight.

Value vs reality doesn’t stack up
– A recurring point in commentary is that paying $4,600 for a visa that may last 18 months with 4+ months processing time suddenly became a luxury.

The question that the applicants are asking is simple – why the sudden increase? What do we pay the extra for?

Migration agents are expressing growing frustration. Once again, many learned of the change via social media, not through formal or timely channels. This is becoming a pattern and it undermines professional practice.

Agents are now left explaining to clients, often at the final lodgement stage, why a prepared application now suddenly costs thousands more for the same visa, with no added benefit.

For many, the post-study work visa is no longer an automatic next step as prospects for further visas are becoming very limited.

Across all commentary, one theme stands out – there has been no clear policy rationale provided for why this increase was necessary, especially for a visa pathway already weakened by earlier reforms.

The bottom line is, that this isn’t just a fee change. It’s another signal that post-study migration in Australia is becoming increasingly unpredictable and arguably unwelcome, despite assurances made only a few years ago.

For the international education sector, this feels like yet another unexpected blow. And the message being sent globally is uncomfortable but hard to ignore: We welcome you when it suits us but don’t expect certainty, stability, or follow-through on our promises.
