What Are the REAL Costs of Overseas Workers in Australia?
Hiring international talent is absolutely possible, but it is not a shortcut, nor a source of “cheap labour.” In many industries, sponsoring talent is a survival requirement, not a luxury. However, when something goes wrong (often at the whim of immigration decision-making), employers can be left without the skilled worker they desperately needed and out of pocket for significant, non-refundable costs. Careful planning is essential.
Thinking about sponsoring international talent? Here’s a clear breakdown of the fees and charges:
Skills in Demand Visa – Subclass 482 (Temporary Visa)
Short-Term Stream — $1,495
✔ Usually for 2-year occupations
Medium-Term / Labour Agreement Stream — $3,115
✔ Higher-demand occupations | Valid up to 4 years
Employer Nomination Scheme – Subclass 186 (Permanent Residency)
Most applications start from: $4,770
The Big One – SAF Levy
This is the cost that catches most businesses off-guard. It applies to both 482 and 186 visas, and it is non-refundable, even if the nomination or visa is refused.
- Up to 4 years temporary visa – large businesses: Up to $7,200
- Up to 4 years temporary visa – small businesses: Up to $4,800
- Permanent visa – Approx. $3,000 once-off
Minimum Salary: TSMIT
You must meet or exceed the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold as of 1 July 2025, TSMIT is AUD 76,515 per year.
Professional Fees (Migration Agents)
Migration Agents may charge anywhere from $4,000 to $20,000+ depending on experience, complexity, and demand. These fees give control over the process, but not the immigration outcome.
