Upcoming Changes to English Language Testing for Australian Visas: What to Expect in 2026
It’s becoming increasingly clear that significant changes to English language testing requirements for Australian visas are on the horizon, likely beginning around 7 August 2026. That date coincides with the introduction of major changes to the PTE Academic test, changes shaped, at least in part, by mandates from the Australian Home Affairs Department.
Here’s what you should know as we approach these changes:
1. New Tests Likely to Be Accepted
LANGUAGECERT, CELPIP, and MET (Michigan English Test) have all completed the rigorous acceptance process required by the Home Affairs department. As part of that process, each provider has published concordance studies aligning their scores with IELTS, ensuring transparency and comparability.
There is every reason to expect that these three tests will soon be added to the list of acceptable English language tests for Australian visa purposes. Although they currently have a relatively small market share, they are backed by large companies, and over time, they will likely draw candidates away from both PTE and IELTS.
2. Possible Changes to Section Score Requirements
The Home Affairs department now has access to detailed concordance tables, there is speculation that some scores for PTE may be increased. In recent years, PTE has become the preferred option for many candidates, partly because its required scores are perceived as more achievable than IELTS.
3. The Future of TOEFL for Australian Visas
The enhanced version of TOEFL iBT, launching globally in January 2026, has not yet been approved by the Home Affairs department and given the scale of changes to the test, approval seems unlikely.
Final Thoughts
With these changes coming, it’s a good time for migration agents, education providers, and candidates to familiarise themselves with a broader range of test options and prepare for potential adjustments in score requirements. Staying informed – as being knowledgeable and flexible will be key to navigating the evolving English language testing landscape in 2026 and beyond.
