Most Common Reasons for Australian Student Visa Refusals
The rejection rate for Australian student visas is high, exceeding 50% of applications, depending on the country of origin. Based on the recent data, the Philippines, India, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Thailand incurred rejection rates between 80–90%, while South America rejection rates are around 30–40% and Europe the rejection rates are below 10%.
Understanding why applications are refused can help prospective students avoid common mistakes. Below are the most frequent reasons for refusals, along with key considerations for each.
1. Not Meeting the Genuine Student (GS) Requirement
One of the most critical factors in any student visa application is proving you are a genuine student. The GS (which replaced the Genuine Student requirement in 2024) is designed to ensure that applicants are coming to Australia for study purposes, not for other motives.
Applicants must explain clearly:
- Why they chose their provider and course
- How the course links to their future career, including salary/employment prospects
- Why they are not studying a similar course in their home country
- Evidence of knowledge about the provider, living arrangements, finances, and prior study
- The relevance of the qualification to their long-term plans
- Immigration history (previous visa refusals or cancellations)
2. Not Meeting English Language Requirements
Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency appropriate to their level of study. Only students enrolling in ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses) are exempt, as they are taking English classes as part of their course.
3. Insufficient Financial Funds
From 1 October 2023, applicants must show evidence of at least AUD $29,710 in available funds for living costs (in addition to tuition). Acceptable evidence includes:
- Bank statements in the applicant’s or parents’/guardians’ names
- Scholarship or sponsorship letters
- Parents’ or guardians’ financial support declarations
- Proof of income (payslips, tax returns)
- Evidence of assets (property, investments)
Applicants bear the responsibility of proving financial stability.
4. Inadequate Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
OSHC is compulsory for the entire duration of study. The OSHC certificate must include policy dates, number, and conditions. Missing or insufficient OSHC coverage will result in visa refusal.
5. Failing the Character Test
All applicants undergo a character check. Authorities may request police clearances from every country lived in for 12+ months within the past 10 years.
- Any criminal record, misleading declarations, or past visa cancellations can lead to refusal.
- In serious cases, applicants may face a 3-year ban on reapplying.
6. Failing the Health Examination
Applicants must meet strict medical requirements. Depending on personal circumstances, the Department of Home Affairs may request specific health checks before approval.
7. Incomplete or Fraudulent Documentation
All information must be supported by authentic documents. Immigration officers can reject applications for missing, altered, or falsified documents. They may also request clarification or additional evidence.
8. Unsatisfactory Academic Progress
A record of poor grades, repeated failures, or lack of academic commitment can signal that an applicant is not a genuine student. Visa officers expect evidence of capacity to succeed in the chosen program.
9. Unsatisfactory Attendance
Attendance below 80% is considered a red flag. Consistent absenteeism suggests a lack of commitment to study and may result in refusal. Attendance is closely monitored as a condition of the student visa.
10. Non-Payment of Course Fees
Applicants must provide proof of tuition payment. Delayed or missing payments raise concerns about financial stability and commitment to study.
11. Invalid or Expiring Passport
The applicant’s passport must:
- Be valid for at least 6 months beyond the end of the course
- Fall within a validity period not exceeding 10 years
