How to Assess if a Student Is Genuine and Has a Prospect of Visa Grant
A Professional and Ethical Responsibility for Every Agent.
If you’re advising international students on studying in Australia, this is not just an opportunity to secure a client, it’s a professional duty to assess their genuine prospects for visa success.
Why?
Because if a student is set up to fail from the start, it wastes time, money, and hope – for the applicant, the agent, and the college. Ethical advising means setting expectations based on the strict criteria set by the Department of Home Affairs.
Here’s a reminder of the key requirements every student must address, at a minimum, in their Genuine Student (GS) Statement:
Academic Background – Past studies, qualifications, transcripts, and institutions attended.
Employment History – Roles held, length of employment, and evidence such as payslips or letters.
Personal Circumstances – Family details, income sources, ties to home country (property, employment, responsibilities).
Course and Provider Selection – Why this course and institution? How does it align with the student’s career path?
Financial Stability – Evidence of funds: savings, scholarships, or sponsorships.
Future Goals – Career aspirations post-study and how the course supports those plans in their home country.
Who are high-risk applicants?
While every case is unique, these factors often indicate higher scrutiny and possible refusal:
- Over 30 and unemployed for several years
- Frequently changing low-wage jobs
- Residing long-term in English-speaking countries but applying for General English
- Applying with entire family (spouse + kids) for short/low-skilled course
- Short General English course applications
- History of visa refusals, overstays, or cancellations
- Criminal history or serious medical complications
Be the Advisor They Deserve
An ethical agent doesn’t just help students apply, they help them make informed decisions. That starts with a real, honest assessment of their eligibility and goals.
Let’s raise the standard of international education by putting integrity before commission.
