Reminder: Increased English Language Requirements (From 23 March 2024)

The Australian Government has raised the minimum English language requirements for Student and Temporary Graduate visas lodged after 23 March 2024, designed to improve learning quality, academic outcomes, and visa integrity.

ELICOS Completion

A student who completes stand-alone ELICOS (not packaged with a main course) does not gain automatic entry into a VET or Higher Education program.

  • ELICOS is not a qualification
  • It only provides evidence of English ability
  • Immigration may not accept ELICOS completion alone for visa purposes
  • Students must still meet the English entry requirement of the course they want to study next

What English Level Do Students Need After ELICOS?

For CRICOS VET Courses

  • Provider entry requirement: Usually IELTS 5.5 (PTE 42–49 / CEFR B1+)
  • Student visa requirement: Now IELTS 6.0

What this means in practice:

  • A provider may accept IELTS 5.5
  • The visa requires IELTS 6.0 for direct entry
  • Students with scores below 6.0 face a high visa-refusal risk
  • Therefore, real-world safe entry level for VET after ELICOS → IELTS 6.0

For Higher Education (Bachelor / Masters)

  • Most universities require IELTS 6.0–6.5, depending on the degree
  • ELICOS completion alone is not accepted unless there is a Direct Entry Arrangement (DEA) between the ELICOS provider and that specific university
