English Testing for Australian Immigration Purposes (Effective 7 August 2025)
These changes are implemented under the Migration (Specification of Language Tests, Test Scores and Passports) Instrument 2025 (LIN 25/016, F2025L00905), effective from 7 August 2025. Tests taken prior remain valid within standard timeframes. Link to the full legislative instrument.
1. New approved tests – Australia now formalised its acceptance of a broader range of English language tests for visa applications:
- Cambridge C1 Advanced (C1 Advanced)
CELPIP General - IELTS Academic & General Training (including IELTS One Skill Retake)
- LANGUAGECERT Academic
- Michigan English Test (MET)
- OET
- PTE Academic
- TOEFL iBT
2. PTE Academic update: The revised PTE Academic also introduces two new speaking tasks—“Summarise Group Discussion” and “Respond to a Situation”—and now takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes. This aims to better assess real-world communication skills. Also the proficiency levels have increased:
- Superior English: Listening: 69, Reading: 70, Writing: 85, Speaking: 88
- Proficient English: Listening: 58, Reading: 59, Writing: 69, Speaking: 76
